Beginner Strings I & II
Background
In an effort to make music education more accessible and equitable on Bainbridge Island, in the fall of 2022 BIYO began to offer an after school program at Blakely Elementary for 2nd-4th graders to learn violin, viola or cello. With seasoned teachers Priscilla Jones and Colleen Walden at the helm and BIYO musicians Elizabeth and Mary Stein as student teachers, the Beginner Strings program was born. Students met twice a week to explore making beautiful sound, reading music, developing practice habits, and playing in a group setting. Our first season saw 11 students enthusiastically complete the course, culminating in a performance at the BIYO 2023 Spring Concert in the Bainbridge High School Theater!
Beginner Strings 2023-2024
Beginner Strings will be returning in the fall of 2023, on Tuesdays and Thursday from 3-4pm at Blakely Elementary. Fall Term (Beginner Strings I) will run from October to January, and Spring term (Beginner Strings II) will run from February to May, culminating in a performance with the BIYO at their Spring Concert in BHS Theater.
When?

Beginner Strings I: 10/3, 10/5, 10/10, 10/12, 10/17, 10/19, 10/24, 10/26, 11/7, 11/9, 11/14, 11/16, 11/21, 11/28, 11/30, 12/5, 12/7, 12/12, 12/14, 1/4, 1/9, 1/11, 1/16, 1/18 (No classes on 10/31, 11/2, 11/23, 12/19, 12/21, 12/26, 12/28 & 1/2)
Beginner Strings II: 2/27, 2/29, 3/5, 3/7, 3/12, 3/14, 3/19, 3/21, 3/26, 3/28, 4/9, 4/11, 4/16, 4/18, 4/23, 4/25, 4/30, 5/2, 5/7, 5/9, 5/14, 5/16, Concert 5/19 4pm (No classes on 4/2, 4/4)
Who can join?
Students grades 2-4 are eligible to enroll, as well as Kindergarteners and 1st graders if attending with a parent. Tuition is $495 per term. BIYO reserves the right to limit class size and to cancel the class with full refund if minimum class enrollment is not met. Class will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
What do I need?
Families are responsible for providing their own instrument. Our partner organization, Kids in Concert, is offering a limited number of rentals based on available inventory. Please contact KIC program manager Kirsten Branson-Meyer at [email protected] to inquire about availability. Other quality rental options include Bischoffberger, Lasley and Sten Olsen in Seattle, and Hammond-Ashley in Issaquah.
What's after Beginner Strings?
After a year of Beginner Strings, students are ready to join our Prelude Orchestra, conducted by Justine Jeanotte. We also strongly encourage students to start lesson with a private teacher so that they can continue to progress.
