Summer Orchestra Camps in Washington State
Kitsap Youth Summer Symphony – Poulsbo, WA
KYSS provides an affordable and fun playing opportunity for young musicians (age 6-21) of all experience levels in a summer day-camp setting. Students participate in full symphony orchestra, sectionals, chamber music groups, and special topics workshops, culminating in a final evening concert. Professional local musicians lead sectionals, chamber groups, and workshops, and experienced high school volunteers act as camp counselors. Special topics workshops this year may include audition preparation, music composition, improvisational styles, conducting, and song & dance ("Glee," anyone?).
This year's camp will be held at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo again, August 1st through the 5th, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a concert on the evening of Friday, August 5th. Beginning strings will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the option to participate in workshops and chamber music if desired.
Cost is $155 ($125 for beginners who leave at 2:00). Register by July 15th with Poulsbo Parks and Recreation, 360-779-9898, 19540 Front St. NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370. T-shirt--concert attire--is free with early registration. The sooner students register, the sooner we can determine how many ensembles to have and what repertory to play.

Laughing Horse Festival - Ellensburg, WA
The Laughing Horse Festival will not be held summer 2011 because the Evergreen Music Festival II will be held at Central Washington University. The CWU program is encouraging all high school age students to participate in the Evergreen Music Festival, Session II. They will be involved also.
The CWU Preparatory Program is planning a camp for K-8 age students for summer 2011.

Cougar String Camp - Pullman, WA

The Washington State University Cougar String Camp
Violinists, violists, cellists and bassists will work with Washington State University faculty to improve their musical skills in a variety of ways. String students will have the opportunity to participate in orchestra, jazz improvisation, fiddling, string techniques class, music theory class, master classes and chamber music (string quartets and trios).

Young Musicians and Artists, Willamette University, Salem, OR
ORCHESTRA - Session 1: June 26 – July 8, 2011 - Grades 4-12
Students who have previous instruction in band or orchestral instruments and who read music may enroll in Instrumental Music during Session 1. Auditions on the first day place musicians in groups according to ability level and determine their placement in orchestra and band. The music faculty exposes students to a wide variety of the world’s great symphonic music, which is rarely offered in middle schools or high schools. Faculty and counselors perform along with the students. This integration of ages and skill levels creates an opportunity for mentoring to take place and facilitates a camaraderie among all musicians. The more advanced student is offered the option of playing in both the band and orchestra, which provides a more rigorous and challenging schedule. Students spend forty-five minutes each day learning in small group sectionals. They are divided into groups according to their instruments and are assigned an instructor who is a specialist in that instrument. Through expert advice and daily personal attention, the students explore the possibilities of their instruments and deepen their understanding of music. Instrumental music students will have the opportunity to work in small chamber groups each afternoon. These small ensembles will work on chamber music suited to their ability levels with one of our music counselors or faculty. Each student is provided with individual practice time. With the many activities going on during the thirteen-day session, the practice periods are welcome opportunities for students to reflect and focus on their own development. Students have many opportunities to perform. In addition to the informal performance on Sunday morning marking mid-session, and the final performance on the last day of the session, there are a number of recitals in which students are encouraged to participate.

Marrowstone in the City - Seattle, WA
MITC is a Seattle-based program designed to provide excellent musical instruction and orchestral training for the younger musician, aged 7-14. The program includes string and wind ensembles, chamber music, sectional and full orchestra rehearsals, a daytime chamber music performance, and a final evening concert for all students.
Students with at least two years playing experience, or a minimum of one year of private instruction, are encouraged to apply to MITC. Prior to the festival, students participate in a live audition for orchestral and ensemble placement.
