*Please note auditions will be held in the upstairs classroom at the south end of the IMC building this year (above the office, on the street side of the building), not in the concert hall.

String players, ages 8-21, are invited to join the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra (BIYO).

REGISTRATION IS COMPLETELY ONLINE THIS SEASON –
please complete all registration information prior to auditions.
You will be asked to perform one of your favorite pieces, play a scale, and sight read. It’s very friendly!

All students, new and returning, Chamber Sinfonietta and Senior Orchestra, are required to audition this season for our new Music Director, Wesley Schulz.
Audition Information
The purpose of the audition is to allow the Music Director to meet musicians and to assess ability level in order to select repertoire for the year. Thank you for taking the time to prepare to the best of your ability.
Please prepare the following for the audition:
1. One major or minor scale of student’s choice:
- Two or three octaves according to ability.
- If auditioning for the Senior Orchestra, key signature must have four or more sharps or flats.
2. Excerpt from a solo composition:
- no more than 3 minutes in length
- musicians auditioning for the Senior Orchestra and returning Senior Orchestra members should prepare TWO contrasting solo pieces totaling 5-6 minutes of music. Choose one piece that best highlights your lyrical side, and another piece that highlights your technical side.
- no accompaniment
- memorization is not required
- choose excerpts that best show your technical and musical abilities.
3. Sight reading appropriate to playing level may be required.
Minimum requirements to play in the BIYO Chamber Sinfonietta:
1. Be at a level equivalent of Book 2 of Suzuki.
2. Be able to read notes in the keys of C, G, D, A.
3. Be able to play in tune in first position.
4. Be able to sight-read simple rhythm patterns.
Additional requirements to play in the BIYO Senior Orchestra:
(grade level typically 8th and above; length of time with BIYO and ability are also considered)
1. Ability to shift into 3rd and 4th positions with notes in tune.
2. Ability to play in tune in keys with four or more sharps or flats.
3. Ability to play with beautiful tone.
4. Ability to play different articulations and bowings.
5. Ability to sight-read simple melodies with dotted rhythms and syncopation.

General Information
Tuition:
$180 for the Fall Semester (Sept 22 – December 11)
$180 for the Winter/Spring Semester (January 12 – tentatively April 15)
or $315 for both terms.

Rehearsals:
PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR REHEARSAL DAY FOR THE NEW SEASON WILL BE THURSDAY EVENINGS.
PLEASE WATCH FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING REHEARSAL LOCATION.
The Chamber Sinfonietta rehearses 5:15-6:45 pm. The Senior Orchestra rehearses at 7:00-8:30 pm. Combined rehearsals and sectionals will be announced as needed.
